Artist Statement
I'm Josephine and the only art classes I've taken are the ones my school provides. I participate in some art activities outside of school, but I usually only sketch when I'm alone. My favorite types are art are doodles, landscapes, abstract, and graffiti. My favorite type of media to use is either watercolor or pencils. I get inspired to create from different books I read or the scenery and people around me. The artwork that's my favorite this semester is the one in the image above. The artwork is a stencil of Marilyn Monroe and the white patches were made from tape completely blocking the paint from making contact with those parts of the paper. The random dots around Marilyn were formed from rain hitting the paper while I was painting it. It's my favorite because I created it with spray paint and I'm very interested in graffiti and the use of spray paint, also because the white spots look abstract and unique along with the dots surrounding Marilyn. In art this semester, I have learned about different techniques of blending and drawing, such as the dot to dot technique I used in our half-face project. When I create art, I feel like I'm expressing myself in ways words can not. I also feel calm and relaxed when I paint and it's like my escape from reality.
